SANGEET SHIROMANI (DIPLOMA) FOR KARNATAK MUSIC

Admission after about three years training in Karnatak Music or equivalent standard evidenced by an entrance test held by the Faculty. The course will lay special emphasis on the attainment of performance standard.

SYLLABUS

There will be three papers, one written and two practicals

Paper-I (Written) 100 Marks

N.S. : Answer requiring much of verbal facility should not be expected. Only questions of the‘objective’ and ‘short nswers’ type, as well as those calling for writing in notation, need to asked. Theory of Svaras Svarasthanas, Sruitis and Gamakas. Raga-Iakshna; detailed study with sancharas in notation, of ragas prescribed in sections (a) and (b) of paper III non detailed
study of ragas prescribed in section (c) of Paper III Tala-Iakshna; 35- Tala Scheme: Desadi, Madyadi and Chapu Talas. Writing, in notation of kritis and improvisations in ragas prescribed in section (a)and (b) of Paper-III. The system of 72 melakaratas in its outline. Musical forms; musicalprosody. Theory of Raga Alapan Tana, Niraval, Kalpanasvara and Pallavi exposition. Gayakagunadoshas; Kacheri dharma.

Paper-II Performance Test:

A performance of 45 to 60 minutes by the candidate according to his or her own choice.Accompaniment: Tambura, violin and mridangam.

Paper-III (Practical):

Composition; 2 Advanced Svarajatis; 3 advanced Varnams (in two degrees of speed) 12 Kritis of Tyagaraja (including atleast 2 Pancharatnas); 9 kritis of Muthuswamy Dikshitar (induding at least one Navagraha, one Navavarna and one panchalinga Kritis) 5 kritis of Shyamashastri, subbaraya shastri; 6 kritis of other composers and 5 miscellaneous compositions.

The following ragas:

  1. For detailed alapana niraval, kalpanasvara, tana, and pallavi in adi, Rupaka. Chapu and Jhampa talas : Sankarabharana, Kalyani, Kambhoji, Todi, Bhairavi and Kharaharipriya.
  2. ) For alapana only : Mukhari, Saveri, Ananda bhairavi, edaragaula, Dhanyasi, Bilahari, Mohana, Poorvi-Kalyani, Pantuvarali, Shanmukhapriya. Simhendramadhyamam and Keeravani.
  3. For non detailed rendering: Nata, Gaula, Arabhi, Sriraga, Varali, Sriranjani, Vasanta,Abhogi, madhyamavati, Hamsadhwani, Suddha-saveri, Devagandhar, Sourastram, Ritigaula,Neelambari, Khamas, Natakuranji. Yadukula-Kambhoji, Surati, Athana, Darbar, Kanada,Sahana, Begada.
